The Art of Loving

The Art of Loving

"Anyone with a heart would agree. It's so easy to fall in love with me" - "So Easy (To Fall in Love)" by Olivia Dean

What is love?

It’s the honeyed scent of mango wafting through the air. It’s the cool sensation of your great-great grandmother’s well-worn sapphire rings and gold pendants against your skin.

Our society limits this powerful, transcendent emotion to the narrow space between two people. But it’s more than a feeling; it’s a state of being.

Much of my childhood was spent in solitude. Sitting alone at lunchtime. Attempts to play at recess were rebuffed. My body became a target for mockery. I thought my lack of relationships was proof that there was nothing to love. If I am my only witness, how can I be loved?

Mastering this art didn’t happen overnight. Years passed as I picked up the pieces of my shattered self. Wearing outfits in my favorite colors, holding my body in all its fullness. Experimenting with new hairstyles.

Be patient with yourself. We’re only human after all.

Looking in the mirror with a gentle and compassionate eye. Bearing witness to your scars and softness without flinching. Finding beauty in your imperfections. Not solely with another, but with life itself.

I’ve fallen in love time and time again. With the softness of my hair after it’s freshly washed. The curve of my tummy after enjoying a home-cooked meal. The laughter of my friends as we reminisce about high school drama. My ability to create entire worlds in the confines of a few pages.

It's heaven in my heart, and we could find you some space.

XOXO, Michaela
